Lilla Oraklet pokes fun at the idea of the nation-as-culture, the (absence of a) Swedish cultural debate, and the contemporary political collapse in which art is sometimes summoned as an emergency measure to save society from its own ugly reflection. Constant votes of no confidence, failed alliances, and the double-edged view of art and the artist now form part of the political landscape’s distinct topography. Political platitudes about the importance of art and culture are accompanied by a sensationalist “extra, extra!” media dramaturgy: Swedish hip-hop allegedly incites drug abuse and organized crime, visual artists fake psychoses on Västerbron in Stockholm, and theatre groups create violent participatory situations from which people return home with newly fabricated traumas. Yes, believe it or not! This cacophony — where one no longer knows in from out, right from left, up from down — is more or less the status quo. Capitalism? Did someone say capitalism? Of course it’s also about the role of capitalism in the gallery game! But honestly, is there even anyone left with the energy to discuss money and value? Gold, paper, crypto — isn’t it the same as it’s always been? The rich grow richer. The educated grow more educated. The gaps widen, the crises arrive ever more frequently. The eternal return has become an everyday and highly tangible event: accelerated, constantly self-reflective, and parodic. Life is a nihilistic meme.
